Things we wish we knew before we started the pattern...

Vogue Spring/Summer 08

Sideways cardigan on cover- pattern #2

A very knowledgeable customer is suggesting that when you get to the fifth repeat on the lower back, mesasure your work. Your might not need to do the 6th repeat. Just as an FYI, there are only five repeats on the front.

Long Gloves

Knit.1
Fall 2007

The wording is a little confusing. For clarification:

thumb:

rnd 30: (k1, p1) twice and place the last 9 sts just worked on a holder, *k1, p1, rep from * to holder. Cast on 3 sts and join--46 sts.

rnd 31: *k1, p1 10 times, place the last 8 sts just worked on a holder.

Ring Hat with Scarf

To make this pattern using Koigu...

Cut 33 fringes (66 pieces in total) 11" long and put at all four corners.  Make sure you cut the fringe first because you will be using all of the yarn you have.

Cast on 324 sts. on #10.5 needle. Hold yarn doubled.

Rowan Magazine No. 39

Rambling Rose Sweater

We have found the shoulders are very narrow on this cardigan (2.5" for size small). To increase the size of the shoulders, bind off fewer stitches at armhole.

Rebecca baby + kids No. 8

Pattern 24 Pale Green Cable Sweater

The neck decreases are done in the cable only - chart rows 9-22.

Directions state "At neck edge dec on every 2nd row 2 sts. once and 1 st. 3 times as given." They are describing the cable chart decreases, not additional decreases.

Jane Elliot Hearts and Flower Stole

The pattern is missing the abbreviation for MB: make bobble.

Suss Fantasy Tote

Finishing tips

Fabric needed: 2/3 yd of 44"-45".

After attaching handles to bag, measure width and height and add 2" to each measurement, i.e. if bag is 19" wide and 20" tall, cut fabric 21" wide by 22" tall.  Stitch fabric right sides together on sides and bottom.  do not turn right side out.

Not Just Plain Jane

Demi Shawl

When you start left shawl you must use a circular needle and when you start the right shawl you must use a straight needle.  This technique is crucial to creating a mirror image of each side.

Alchemy

Femme Fatale

This pattern is not recommended for beginners.  For best results wooden needles are recommended.  Consult pattern notes for back shaping.  Measure pieces vertically by holding them up.  If you measure the pieces flat, they appear to be shorter than they actually are.

Crochet stitches in British patterns

When using a crochet pattern from a British company, make sure to note the following changes for stitch names:

one British double crochet equals one U.S. single crochet

one British half treble crochetequals one U.S. half double crochet

one British treble crochetequals one U.S. double crochet

#29     1 Sweater 3 Ways

This pattern is rated "Very Easy", however, in our experience, it is a project for an advanced beginner. Ease at reading patterns and reverse shaping is a must!

Blue Sky Alpaca

Half Cable Sweater Socks

The pattern calls for using a size 5 needle with Blue Sky Worsted.  Our test knitter felt this created a fairly dense fabric and went up to a size 7 needle.  The change in needle size resulted in a much softer sock.

Weekend Knitting clarifications

Brioche scarf hat and neckwarmer pg 62-67

Page 67 Neckwarmer

1. For the basic Rnd 1, Rnd 2-- the slipped stitch on Rnd 1 is always knit; the slipped stitch on Rnd 2 is always purl.

2. After the set-up round you will have 96 stitches (it doesn’t say this in the pattern)

3. At the end, work 3 rounds of brioche. To get to the following K1, P1, you will need to combine each slipped stitch in the last row of brioche with the next stitch to get down to the 64 stitches originally cast on –K or P 2tog
