So, who is…Shiri Mor?
I am a fairly happy knitwear designer, living and working in Brooklyn, NY. My hands are mostly busy knitting and crocheting, but I love handicrafts of all kinds – embroidery, jewelry making, polymer clay, etc.
Why Knitting?
Knitting found me serendipitously when I saw an ad online calling for sample knitters. At the time it was a hobby, and I couldn’t imagine that someone would actually pay me to do it. Things snowballed from there, as I discovered a whole industry centered around yarn and fiber crafts, and discovered my place in it.
Accomplishments…
My designs have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Knit1, Crochet Today, and Knit Simple magazines, as well as various publications by Lion Brand Yarns and Tahki Stacy Charles. I’ve taught classes and created quite a few new knitters in the NYC area. However, the accomplishment I am most proud of was designing and building my own website with a searchable pattern library, www.ShiriDesigns.com, since I knew nothing about web design when I began creating it.
How do you know your friends at Knitting Central?
Cynthia and I worked together at LYS in NYC. Cynthia was the first person to ever call me a designer. I had previously thought that all knitters make up their own patterns, and had no idea I possessed a marketable skill.
How do you approach your designs?
I see design as a logistical, creative-solving, technical endeavor, and tend to think about the construction of a garment first, before style. Many of my designs appear complicated at first, but are written as relatively simple patterns, which can make for a neat stepping-stone for beginner and intermediate knitters.
What is your favorite type of knitting or your favorite type of garment to knit?
My favorite type of knitting is actually… well…crochet!! Crochet is considered a sister craft to knitting, and I find that it is highly underrated. In fact, I find that the two can be combined easily, creating lots of additional options and possible patterns.
As far as garments, I enjoy designing items that flatter the feminine figure, as opposed to hiding it, which I see all too often in traditional knitting. I also enjoy designing items that are intended for, or feature, pets and animals.
What does knitting mean to you?
Knitting to me is a unique outlet for my love of math. When most people think of math, they think of homework or taxes. Knitting is a great example of how numbers are all around us, and can be used to our advantage for purposes of fun and creativity, rather than just tedium. I love to tweak the numbers in stitch patterns for a variety of results, and love to watch my formulas materialize before my eyes.
We are so thrilled to have Shiri designing for Knitting Central this year. She is one of the most talented and hardworking knitwear designers we know. Shiri has been a dear friend of ours for years and we are so happy that she has gifted us with an incredible design created with Classic Elite's, Moorehouse Merino, for our booth, #2201. Shiri and Sarina from "Moving Mud", worked together to create exquisite buttons to coordinate perfectly with Shiri's design.
